When we meet people from other parts of the world and they ask us where is your company based at, we usually tell them we're from “near Mumbai”. But we are from Surat, a city that lies on the estuary of the Tapi River some 300 km north of Mumbai. While few people know of Surat outside India today, and Indians usually know of it as just another industrial tier-2 city, Surat was once one of the largest and most connected cities on the Indian Ocean. Before the British established Bombay as their trading hub, Surat was a center for Indian Ocean trade and attracted merchants, craftsmen, and sailors from across the world. This meant that by the early modern era, Surat had a distinctly cosmopolitan feel and mercantile bent, characteristics which one can still discern in the city today, albeit in slightly different guises.
Surat's economy drives from a range of manufacturing and industry fields such as diamonds, textiles, petrochemicals, shipbuilding, automobile, port etc. Since it is known for producing textiles, including cotton and silk, Surat is known as the textile hub of India. It is very famous for its cotton mills and Surat Zari Craft. Surat is the biggest center of MMF (man-made fiber) in India. It has a total of 500+ dyeing and printing mills and 61,100 power loom units. There are over a hundred thousand units and mills in total. The overall annual turnover is around 7 billion rupees. There are over 2000 cloth wholesalers in Surat. All the five pillars of the industry: machinery, material, manpower (human resources), money, and market are in place. The strong linkages between these have contributed to the success of the industry.
